F.A.Q.s

What’s a ‘bender’?

A real human being who bends glass tubes in fire, then puts noble gases in said tubes to create what we call NEON. Fun fact: did you know Neon is just the name-sake of the medium. There are 4 other noble gases that burn different colors and brilliances also used in creating Neon work (most commonly Argon) which burns a light blue.

How much does this cost?

These are custom pieces so of course cost is unique to each piece. A good starting point to estimate cost is a 24”W x6”H text-based sign with a plexiglass backing, starts at $950.

Isn’t LED more efficient, more durable, more eco friendly?

NO (except for durable, sure you can drop your LED on the floor. Have a good time with that). Neon is just as, and in many cases more, efficient than LED. It’s true that LED is more efficient than incandescent bulbs, but it is not the case with Neon.

The largest neon power source (called a transformer) delivers 15,000 volts to the sign but only draws 3.7 amps from the wall. This is pretty dang efficient.

LED, a plastic product that contains Arsenic and Lead, will never be more eco-friendly than Neon, a glass product that optionally contains a very small ball of Mercury, smaller than the size of a pea. You do not need to use Mercury if you do not wish and the Noble gas inside the glass is called “noble” for a reason - it is inert, non reactive and perfectly safe to breathe. In fact, it’s in the atmosphere. Neon will last, theoretically, decades so it sure beats plastic that lasts an average of 3 years and sits in a landfill.

What is the quoting and hiring process?

Prospective clients will fill out the form above and disclose their location, ideal budget and as many details as possible about their project (size, color, font, where it’s going and any needs for the space.

At this time, we will consult with our network to find an available artist closest to you. We will respond with any follow up questions about your project before giving an estimate. Once an estimate is approved, we will require a completed agreement of the scope of the work and a deposit payment before the start of production.

How long will my sign last?

As mentioned above, neon can last decades. That being said, there could be some maintenance required during its lifespan. She Bends will offer a warranty of 1 year for issues related to any inherent vice within the work (issues arising from the way it was made or installed). She Bends will remain available to discuss and troubleshoot work.
